Cooking Alone

Sofia is sixteen. She lives with her father in a small flat. Her father cooks every evening, and Sofia only watches.

She likes the sound of the kitchen in the evening. The knife on the board, the water in the pot. It means her father is home.

On Friday her father calls her. "I am late today," he says. "Please cook something. There is a soup in the old cookbook."

Sofia is nervous. She opens the cookbook on page twelve. The recipe is short: potatoes, carrots, onion, water and salt.

The cookbook is old. Some pages have small brown spots. On page twelve somebody wrote three words: "more salt, less water".

She takes a big pot. She washes the vegetables. The knife is heavy and the onion makes her cry.

"This is silly," she says to the empty kitchen. But she cuts everything small and puts it in the pot.

The water boils. Sofia waits and looks at the clock. The kitchen smells warm and good. She feels proud.

She sends a photo of the pot to her friend Alina. "Is this soup?" she writes. Alina answers, "It is orange. That is a good sign."

Then she tastes the soup. It has no salt. She adds a spoon of salt and tastes again. Now it is too salty.

Sofia adds more water and one potato. She waits ten minutes. She tastes the soup again and smiles.

Then she puts bread on the table. She folds two napkins. The clock says ten to eight, and she sits down and waits.

At eight her father comes home. He is tired and hungry. He stops in the door and says nothing. He sees the table, the bread and two bowls.

He eats two plates of soup. "This is really good," he says. "Where is the salt?" Sofia laughs and sits down. "You do not need it," she answers.
