withstand folgt stand, also zweimal withstood. Anders als das deutsche standhalten steht es ohne Präposition: „The roof withstood the storm“, nicht „withstood to the storm“. Es passt zu Belastungen und Kräften — Schmerz aushalten heißt eher bear oder endure.
