Tom ist Anfang dreißig und zieht in eine kleinere Wohnung zwei Straßen weiter. Er hat drei Freunden geschrieben, und alle drei sagen am Samstagmorgen ab. Allein steht er zwischen zwanzig Kisten und einem schweren Sofa.

Der Text
Lies erst auf Englisch. Die Übersetzung steht darunter, ist aber zunächst verdeckt.
Tom rented a small van for Saturday. He packed twenty boxes on Friday night. Three friends promised to help him at nine. He wrote the room on every box. The pen was almost empty.
At half past eight the first message came. "Sorry, I'm ill." At nine the second came. The third friend didn't write at all.
Tom stood in the empty kitchen. The van was outside, and he had it for six hours only. "I must start now," he said aloud.
The lift in the building was broken again. Tom carried eight boxes down four floors. His arms were tired after twenty minutes. He counted the steps on the way down. There were sixty-four.
Then he looked at the sofa in the corner. It was old, green and very heavy. He couldn't move it alone, not even one metre. Two people sat on it every evening for years. Now it looked bigger than the door.
Someone knocked on the open door. It was Mr Okafor, the neighbour who lived across the hall. He was seventy-one.
"You're making a lot of noise," he said. Tom apologised quickly. Mr Okafor laughed. "That wasn't a complaint. Where are your friends?"
Tom told him the truth. The old man went away and came back with a trolley. It was the kind that removal men use. The wheels were black and quiet. It could carry a fridge.
"I worked with furniture for thirty years," he said. "You should never lift with your back. Use your legs and your knees."
Together they moved the sofa onto the trolley. They went down the stairs slowly, step by step. Mr Okafor counted every step out loud. Tom went first and held the front. The sofa passed the corner exactly.
By one o'clock the van was full. The new flat was only two streets away. They drove there twice and carried everything up. They tied the doors with an old belt. Nothing fell out on the way.
In the new kitchen Tom found two cups in a box. He made tea, and they sat on the green sofa. Nothing else was in the room. The tea was too strong for both of them. Nobody said anything about it.
"I'm very grateful," Tom said. "I'm going to invite you for dinner next week." Mr Okafor took the old keys from his pocket.
"Give these to the caretaker," he said. "And keep the trolley until Monday. You'll need it for the shelves."
