Achten Sie beim Lesen auf die Wegbeschreibungen: „turn left“, „go straight on“, „take the second street“. Diese Wendungen brauchen Sie auf jeder Reise. Achten Sie außerdem auf die Modalverben „must“, „can't“ und „might“. Sie zeigen, wie sicher oder unsicher eine Person ist. Am Ende können Sie den Weg von Yusuf auf einer eigenen Skizze nachzeichnen.

Lies erst auf Englisch. Die Übersetzung steht darunter, ist aber zunächst verdeckt.
Yusuf came to York for one day only. He wanted to see the small city museum near the river. It closed at five, and his train home left at seven. His phone was dead.
So he bought a paper map at the station for two pounds. "You don't see a city on a screen," his grandfather always said. Yusuf smiled and put the map in his pocket.
At two o'clock he started walking. The plan was simple: straight on, over the bridge, then second left. But at the corner a man in a green jacket stopped him.
"You can't go through here today," the man said. "There's a market in the lane." Yusuf looked past him. Fifty stalls stood between the old houses, and hundreds of people moved slowly between them.
"Which way should I go?" Yusuf asked. "Round the wall," the man said. "It's longer, but it's quicker." That sentence sounded strange, but Yusuf thanked him and turned right.
The wall was high and grey and very old. From the top he could see the whole city. Red roofs, two towers and the brown river. He took a photo in his head, because his phone was dead.
Then he went down the wrong steps. At the bottom there was no bridge and no river. Yusuf opened his map, turned it around twice and understood nothing. He was lost.
A young woman that he asked pointed to a narrow lane. "Through there and left," she said. The lane was so narrow that the roofs almost touched above his head.
Halfway along it he found a bookshop with a cat in the window. He stayed inside for twenty minutes. He bought an old book about bridges and forgot the time completely.
When he came out, a clock said ten to five. Yusuf ran. He crossed the bridge, turned left and saw the entrance of the museum. A woman was closing the door.
"I'm sorry," she said. "We're closed." Yusuf stood still and got his breath back. Then he laughed, and the woman looked at him in surprise.
"It's fine," he said. "I saw the wall, a market, a lane and a bookshop." He showed her the book about bridges. "I'll come back for the museum next month."
On the train home he opened the map again. He drew a line along his detours with a pencil. The line went all round the city, and that made him happy.
