Agnes wohnt seit acht Jahren im dritten Stock eines Hauses mit sechs Wohnungen. Als im Hof ein Sommerfest stattfindet und sie keine Einladung bekommt, ist sie verletzt. Sie sagt jedoch nichts. Die Geschichte erzählt, was wirklich passiert ist.
Der Text steht im Simple Past und benutzt viel wörtliche Rede. Achten Sie beim Lesen auf die Relativsätze mit „who“ und „that“ und auf die Modalverben „can“, „must“ und „should“. Achten Sie außerdem darauf, wie ein kleiner Fehler eine große Wirkung hat — und wie leicht er sich am Ende aufklärt.

Lies erst auf Englisch. Die Übersetzung steht darunter, ist aber zunächst verdeckt.
Agnes lived on the third floor for eight years. The house had six flats and a small courtyard with two trees. She knew every step of the stairs and every noise in the house.
She knew everybody a little and nobody very well. She said hello on the stairs and carried other people's parcels up. Twice a year somebody brought her flowers from the garden.
In July somebody put tables in the courtyard. There were lights in the trees and a big bowl of salad. Somebody put music on, and children ran between the chairs.
Agnes watched from her window. She saw the family from the ground floor. She saw the students and the man with the grey dog. They laughed a lot, and the sound came up to her window.
Nobody asked her. She got no invitation. She sat down and felt hurt, and then a little foolish. She thought about her cake tins and closed the curtain.
"They can have their party," she said to her plants. But she went to bed early and slept badly. The lights in the trees were still on at midnight.
For two weeks she was quiet on the stairs. She said hello, but she didn't stop and talk. The neighbours noticed it, but nobody knew the reason.
Then Liv from the second floor knocked on her door. She held a small envelope in her hand. The envelope was small, white and a little dusty at one corner.
"This is yours," Liv said. "It was in my letterbox. I think it went in the wrong one in June." "The boxes are old and the numbers are hard to read," she added.
The note said: "Summer party in the courtyard, Saturday at four. Please bring a cake. Your neighbours." Under it somebody drew a sun and six little houses.
Agnes read it twice. Then she laughed, and the laugh sounded a bit like crying. "I thought nobody wanted me." "That is a stupid thing to think," she said. "But I thought it."
"We waited for you," Liv said. "The man with the dog asked twice. We thought you don't like parties." "We should have knocked. I'm sorry about that," she said.
They stood in the door and explained everything. It took four minutes. A misunderstanding is often that small. Agnes made tea, and Liv stayed for half an hour.
"We will do it again in August," Liv said. "I'm going to knock this time." Agnes promised a lemon cake. On the stairs she stops again now, and she talks.
