Achten Sie beim Lesen auf die Durchsagen im Text: Bahnhofsenglisch ist knapp und voller fester Wendungen wie „platform“, „change at“ oder „terminates here“. Achten Sie außerdem auf „will“ und „going to“ in den Sätzen über die Fahrt. Wer diese beiden Formen und die Wendungen am Bahnsteig kennt, kommt auf jeder Reise in Großbritannien gut zurecht.

Ewan wanted to visit his sister Maura. She worked at a hospital in the north. She had two free hours at four. He bought a return at the ticket machine. The little country station had two platforms and one old timetable.
The loudspeaker said something at ten past two. The announcement was short and unclear. Ewan only understood "platform" and a number. It sounded like two, so he walked over the bridge.
A train came in three minutes later. The sign on the front was dirty and difficult to read. Ewan got on with fifteen other people. He found a seat by the window.
For ten minutes everything was fine. Then he saw a hill on the wrong side of the carriage. Ewan knew this hill well. It should be behind the train, not in front of it.
His stomach went cold. He was going in the wrong direction. The fields outside moved past the window. Every one of them took him further from Maura.
The guard came through the carriage. Ewan showed his ticket and asked a short question. "This is the southern line," the guard said. "You want the other one."
"How far is the next station?" Ewan asked. "Twenty-five minutes," the guard said. "But don't get off there. Stay on until the junction and change. That'll be faster."
Ewan sent his sister a message. "Wrong train. I'll be late. Sorry." Maura answered with three words: "Bring me chocolate." He read it twice and felt much better.
At the junction he ran down the steps and up again. The other train stood on platform four with open doors. A woman with a suitcase held one door for him.
This time he checked everything. He read the sign and asked a man on the platform. Then he looked at the map inside the carriage. Then he sat down and breathed out.
The train had a delay of eleven minutes. Ewan arrived at the hospital at ten to five. He bought chocolate in the shop by the door. It was the last bar on the shelf.
Maura waited outside with two cups of tea. "Fifty minutes late," she said. "That's a record." "Next time I'll read the timetable," Ewan said, "and I won't trust the loudspeaker."
